Ninth House - Book Review

If you remember in an earlier blog I mentioned a book called Six of Crows. Many years after the release of that book the author, Leigh Bardugo, wrote a passion book of hers. Something completely different from her popular Young Adult series. This book, Ninth House, was her first adult novel. It's themes were different from those of her young adult stuff and when it was first announced, people were unsure of what to expect.

Being a huge fan of the author, and enjoying a large range of stories, I purchased the book upon release. I am going to admit, on first attempt at reading the novel, I struggled. The writing was different, the mood was different and the story felt slow. I read the first chapter, put the book down, and two months later, re-read the first chapter. Only to put it down again for several months.

It wasn't until I had an extra credit on audible that I finally decided to listen to the book. If you enjoy audio books this is one I recommend SO MUCH! I was three chapters into the audio book when I couldn't wait. I grabbed the book, re-read the first three chapters and had the rest of the novel finished within a day. (I also then listened to the rest of the audio book). I was hooked! The slow start builds up the characters who are so much fun and I wanted to see what happened to them.

It took her years to announce the next book Hell Bent, but the moment she did I had it preordered and ready to go. Before it's release, I listened to Ninth House again, and then listened to Hell Bent on release. (I also read it in two days). The final book in the series, Dead Beat, just released last month and I am so excited to dive into it!

If you enjoy a darker themed, occult magic kind of book with some mystery and a dash of horror. This is one you'll enjoy. Even though it took some time to get into it, it was well worth it in the end. Check out the audio book if you want a real treat!
