Shift to Sci-Fi- College Stories

Even though I had become massively addicted to fantasy, I struggled to find a sci-fi story that I liked. I watched some Sci-Fi movies like The Fifth Element and Waterworld, but I just couldn't really get into the sci-fi book genre.
So, one day I was between college classes trying to decide what to do with my time. I was between novels and couldn't think of an idea for another. I scrolled through my past stuff hoping to get something... and realized I had touched most genres at some point and yet... I didn't write anything sci-fi. I decided to test myself and branch out some. So I began to write a sci-fi piece.
I got a few pages into it and then shifted to something "more" sci-fi since... the piece I started felt more fantasy than sci-fi. After writing a bit in that and coming up with a concept for it. I plotted the whole piece out... and then haven't done much with it since.
I still have the two starts of the sci-fi pieces, and the plot written down but I haven't had much interest in returning to them. Maybe one day but... who knows.
Until then! What's your favorite sci-fi book? Is there one out there that I seem to be missing? Let me know in the comments below! And come back next week for a early works peek at one of those pieces.
