Let's talk about trauma

Hello readers,
Today we are going to hit on a deeper topic. For those of you who have read any of my novels you are aware that a lot of my characters have some form of trauma. In my education I have studied trauma and the effects that trauma has on people. I am trained to teach two trauma classes as well as a parenting class that relates to trauma informed care. My degrees are both psychology and trauma focused and I've worked with many people, young and old, who have experienced trauma in their lives. Not to mention my own traumas I have experienced in my life.
With all of that said, trauma can have different effects on people. One trauma that maybe experienced by multiple people can be seen in totally different ways and may even have different effects on a person.
For example, if you have read my newest novel, Knowing, then you know that both Kayson and his sister Tamah have experienced abuse and trauma in their lives. But of them handle this trauma in completely different ways.
Kayson for example, has grown cold and hard from this. He cuts himself off from others, except his sister, and has shut down a lot of his emotions.
Tamah on the other hand, has grown fearful and silent. She doesn't speak for years and ever little thing scares her, including her brother.
A large part of what makes us who we are, is developed from our past and for my characters, how they handle trauma.
There are many forms of trauma, and what one person may view as a trauma for them, is not for another person. In a later blog I'll talk more about the forms of trauma. But for now, know that many of my characters have gone through some form of trauma and it shapes who they are and what they do in their lives.
Both the good... and the bad.
