The more I got into fantasy the more I began to explore. My first handful of books were vampires and then witches, but then I found a book by my favorite author, Vivian Vande Velde, called Dragon's Bait. I'd never read anything about dragons before... this was my first taste of something besides vampires and witches and the moment I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. It became a favorite that I read over and over. To this day, it is my favorite by the author and likely still one of my most favorite books.

So what is it about?

Dragon's Bait is about a girl named Alys who is accused of being a witch - She of course is not and the whole reason why she is accused is explained through the book. But, because they accuse her and she is found "guilty" they put her out as a sacrifice to the dragon that is harassing the town.

Instead of eating her though, the dragon, Selendrile, takes a human form and offers to help her get revenge on the people who ruined her life. The rest of the book is about their plan to do so, their forming friendship, and her growing to decide if revenge is what she really wants.

This book has a lot of twists, an ending that I, at the time, didn't see coming, and characters I feel in love with. Because of this book I realized that mythical creatures could have human forms in order for them to hide from the humans who maybe trying to kill them. From this book I made my own OC dragon who was named, Seldrin (in honor of Selendrile). And from this book my love of dragons grew and I branched out into other supernatural creatures.

It is an older book but still one I try to read as often as I can. If you have not had a chance to read it yet, I suggest you do so. You can find the book here to purchase.

What is your favorite supernatural creature? Let me know in the comments below.
